Although Prime Minister Robert Menzies used to say Australians were ´´British to the bootstraps´´, there were some who worried we were not engaging enough with the countries in our own region. In the late 1970s and early 80s broadcaster Tim Bowden recorded interviews with some of Australia´s pioneering journalists for their work in the Asia Pacific region and beyond, including Margaret Jones – the Sydney Morning Herald’s first correspondent accredited to Peking, in 1973, and Pat Burgess, perhaps most known for his coverage of the Vietnam War. Douglas Wilkie was a war correspondent in Asia and Europe; Elizabeth Riddell covered the re-occupation of Europe from the Germans in 1944; and Diane Willman reported from Beirut from 1969-1977. These are the personal accounts and true stories from Australian journalists that have brought the news back to their homeland from across the globe. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Tim Bowden. The Drowning Guard: A Novel of the Ottoman Empi...

Each morning in the hour before dawn, a silent boat launches on the Bosphorous, moving swiftly into the deepest part of the waters halfway between Europe and Asia, where a man will die.... In a gender reversal of Scheherazade in The Arabian Nights: Tales from a 1,001 Nights, Ottoman princess Esma Sultan seduces a different Christian lover each night, only to have him drowned in the morning. The Sultaness´s true passion burns only for the Christian-born soldier charged with carrying out her brutal nightly death sentence: her drowning guard, Ivan Postivich. The Drowning Guard explores the riddle of Esma - who is at once a murderer and a champion and liberator of women - and the man who loves her in spite of her horrifying crimes. This textured historical novel, set in the opulence and squalor of Istanbul in 1826, is woven with the complexity and consequences of love. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Suzanne Cypress. Tokyo-Yokosuka 1976-1983

The third in the trilogy of Greg Girard´s journals from his earliest archives ´I first arrived in Tokyo in 1976, intending to stay a day or two on my way to SE Asia. I checked my luggage at the airport, took the train into the city and got off at the bright lights of Shinjuku. I wandered the streets all night and by morning decided I was going to stay´ - Greg Girard The photographs in Tokyo 1976-1983 are about the Tokyo I was living in at the time. It would be some years later before I started making a living as a magazine photographer and many years after that before I started to consider this early, mostly unpublished, work from Japan to be significant. These photographs are the result of that decision by a twenty-year-old photographer, and the momentum from that first impression turned me loose in a city I never tire of photographing, both during the years I lived there and on subsequent visits.
